5 Hip Hop & Rap Artists That Inspire

Independent vocal artists and aspiring rappers—are you in need of some inspiration? Throughout my childhood and music career, I’ve been influenced by so many artists, old and new—including completely different genres. I’ll keep it related to rap and hip hop this time around, but below is a list of some of MY favorite artists, who I encourage anyone to study if they’re a rapper or vocal artist.

1. Nas

Nas, also known as Nasir Jones, is a legendary rapper and songwriter from Queens, New York. He’s widely considered one of the greatest rappers of all time, and his 1994 debut album “Illmatic” is considered a classic in the genre. Nas’ storytelling and unique flow have been an inspiration to many. He’s known for his deeply personal and socially conscious lyrics, which tackle themes of poverty, drug use, and inner-city life.

2. Kendrick Lamar

Kendrick Lamar is a rapper, songwriter and record producer from Compton, California. He’s known for his storytelling, political and social commentary, and his ability to blend different musical genres. Kendrick Lamar’s has won numerous awards and accolades, including 11 Grammy Awards. He’s been an inspiration to many, not only for his music but also for his ability to use his platform to speak out against social issues.

3. J. Cole

J. Cole is a rapper, songwriter and record producer from Fayetteville, North Carolina. He’s known for his storytelling, introspective lyrics, and his ability to connect with his audience. J. Cole’s ability to speak to the struggles of everyday people has been an inspiration to many. He’s also known for his humility and dedication to his craft, which has earned him a large and dedicated fanbase.

4. Lauryn Hill

Lauryn Hill is a rapper, singer, and songwriter from New Jersey. She rose to fame as a member of the Fugees, but her solo debut album “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” is considered one of the greatest albums in the genre. Lauryn Hill’s versatility and ability to blend different musical genres has been an inspiration to many. She’s also known for her powerful and socially conscious lyrics, which tackle themes of love, heartbreak, and identity.

5. Tupac Shakur

Tupac Shakur was a rapper, actor, and poet from East Harlem, New York. Despite his tragic early death, he’s considered one of the greatest rappers of all time, and his music continues to be an inspiration to many. Tupac was known for his politically charged lyrics, and his ability to speak to the struggles of the inner-city. He’s also known for his charismatic stage presence and ability to connect with his audience.

From old-school legends to modern trailblazers, these artists have pushed the boundaries of the genre and left a lasting impact on the industry.
